Seminar "Britische Seefahrtsgeschichte"

Turner, The Battle of Trafalgar, 1822.

The Students' Council Seminar, in cooperation with Prof. Norbert Finzsch, in the winter term 2009/10 was a so called 'block seminar' (4 sessions on Saturdays).

The Seminar dealt with british naval history: Over a long period, Great Britain was received in terms of naval supremacy. British trade and military power as the grounding of the British Empire were easily translated in the number of ships and their dominant position at sea. The British Navy - including such famous sailors as James Cook and Horatio Nelson as well as famous ships like 'HMS Victory' - were and are part of the British popular culture. The Battle of Trafalgar and the Glorious First of June are still commerated today and were important landmarks in British history.

In the seminar we discussed several aspects of british naval history. Alongside some theoretical aspects, there was a strong focus on microhistory.

The Students' Council was represented by Christoph Laugs, Jerry, Mario Menner and Stephanie Greiner.
